HOW I SURVIVED PSLE (PART 1)

This is a part one (hopefully) cos if you asked me any questions, I would answer them in part two.

Though from our "outing", that idea seems too far-fetched.

So I won't really be counting on it or anything.

I seriously think I'm crazy to actually type out all these stuff for you. Because you probably won't even read it since you don't really visit this blog right? So, MM can print this out and show them during their tuition lessons. I hope.

HOW I SURVIVED PSLE.
(Wow this sounds so cool! Like a title of some book)

First things first.

What is PSLE?

If you don’t know, well, I just have to wonder whether you have been living under a rock all those years.

So I guess I don’t have to elaborate on that. (I hope).

Anyway.

You don’t really have to stress too much over PSLE.

Why?

According to my History Teacher in Nanyang (who will hereby be referred to as simply “HT”, for confidential reasons), PSLE is unreliable.

Oh, and I think that Mr. Ong has mentioned to you that PSLE isn’t really important.

Ok, the reason why it’s unreliable is that not everyone can release their full potential during PSLE. Many other factors could affect your performance, like nervousness, and worse, if you got ill.

For example, ME. I got a lowly 266 for PSLE which ranks about No. 20+ out of the 32 students in my class in Nanyang. But in the end, well, let’s just say I improved by…A LOT?

So well, PSLE can’t really measure your level of intelligence. You might score really well during school exams, but your marks could drop by say, 10, for PSLE. There were true cases for some of my classmates in BPPS.

And the importance of PSLE?

Well, it is only there to get you into a good secondary school. That’s all it does. Because, like what Mr. Ong said, no company will want to look at how high/low you score for PSLE. What matters next after PSLE is, O’levels, A’levels and university.

How to study for PSLE?

Well, just don’t stress over it too much.

For me, I didn’t really study much.

But well, if you study at the last minute, don’t bother about Chinese.

There’s really no need to study for Chinese, because it’s so easy. And there’s nothing much to study for that.

I really don’t have many ideas for this…so…

Just study what your teacher tells you to.

If I’m not wrong, yours is one of the blessed batches to use calculators right?

So remember to learn properly how to use them accurately and quickly.

How did I survive PSLE?

That’s a really good question.

But I forgot.

I seriously can’t remember what I was doing before PSLE…

However, I do remember I had an awful stomachache before most of the PSLE exams.

You know, when you’re really really nervous and you get those butterflies in your stomach while practically ruins all possibilities of concentration and makes you just want to rush to the toilet and waste precious exam time?

Well. My solution to that was humming/singing songs. It really does work, because it takes your mind off the pain. It’s better if you hum/sing an energizing/happy song instead of a melancholic/woeful song though.

These is all I can think of now.

If you have any questions, tag/post on this blog.

Because it's dead and it's only alive cos we seniors post on it.

I know it has been ages ago when we had the senior and junior outing. But I still think that I should comment on it.

I don't know why, but is it so difficult to start a conversation with us? Or are we very weird or whatsoever that when we try to talk to you guys, you all avoid us. Giggling among yourselves, hiding, smiling, blushing... .... Do you know that we felt so embarrass and 尴尬 when you all react like that?

I know that it's my fault that I am late but can you at least say something when we talk to you? We also need a lot of effort to talk to you guys. We don't know each other at all and yet we tried. But what kind of treatment is this?!?

If I am not wrong, this should be a Q&A session. But what it ended up is like a two gang outing - "the seniors gang" and "the juniors gang". I am so disappointed. I don't know what will happen if we continue to try talking to you and you keep ignoring us... Perhaps I will really 抓狂.

If you say that you are from an English speaking family and does not wish to communicate in Chinese, well, fine. But we did try in both languages but still didn't get a reply and we ended up in the "I give up" senario...

Haiz... I hope that next time if we have the chance to meet up, this thing won't happen again. Kays?

Anyway wish you guys a belated merry christmas...

All the best in Year 2010

Outing on 16th

The outing yesterday was quite fun and enjoyable, right?

However, some has failed to realised that it was supposed to be a CO-OUTING. A JUNIOR/SENIOR outing.

And that's where the problem lies.

This CO-OUTING was supposed to be something like a junior/senior bonding session right? Like a get-to-know-you-better session. And perhaps a Q&A session.

But the thing is, we didn't really talk. Or chat. Or communicate. Which is personally, what I was looking forward to.

As seniors, when we ask you a question right, we would really rather get a reply instead of like some giggles, smiles, and then you go into hiding or something. Cos we're really not that scary and intimidating right?

We understand that you might be shy to talk to us or something cos we still have this age gap of 2 years but the thing is that when we ask you something and you don't answer we feel embarrassed also.

Since we're the seniors, we're supposed to take initiative to guide you and stuff, but since we aren't that much older than you we would of cos also feel shy and hesitant about talking to you, so we also need to muster up some courage to actually try and start a conversation.

In the end, the outing wasn't much of a bonding session right? The juniors and seniors stuck together, and we seniors are also partly responsible for this scenario, I admit that we never really put in much effort to communicate with you and stuff. It might as well have been 2 separate outings by 2 different groups of people.

So I hope that next time, and I really really hope for a next time, if/when we have another co-outing together, then we can really chat and stuff. You can really ask us anything, like ANYTHING, from studies to choosing schools to emo-ing to worrying about PSLE and yeah. We'll help.

But it's good that most(if not everyone) enjoyed this outing and liked it.

love, (yes, LOVE)

GPA

When I was in university, we were using GPA to count scores. But our GPA scoring is different from NUS and NTU.

Like in our college,

Each module (subject) has a highest score of 4.0. Then our GPA is calculated based on the assignments, tests, classroom participation and presentations that you have been awarded. So in our college, a score of 2.5/4.0 for a module is considered C grade. The grading would be 2.6,2.8,3.0,3.2,3.4,3.6...etc

By 3.2, it's already A-. But usually to get 3.2, you need to put half of your life into the course. Remember that in every semester in university(meaning every 3months), you take up 5 subjects, attend classes and tutorials, stay back to do project and rehearse presentations, write up about 5000 (5k) essays, sit through 2 major exams and spend a whole lot of your life waiting for friends to show up for project meetings. So you can only afford to put so much of your life for each module.

At the end of the semester, you get all 5 grades for the 5 modules you took up. For e.g. 3.0, 3.0,3.0,3.0,3.0 (let say the student got all 3.0 for 5 modules). You add up all the grades (of 3.0) and divide by 5.The final answer is your GPA for that semester. That's my school's calculation.

I think in NUS and NTU they do GPA but their highest grade is 5.0. As SMU is very US-centric (meaning US focused), we follow strict US college methods in scoring and assessment. So speaking up in class and disagreeing with your professors gains you points!!Hehe...

Kailin, is this the way your school counts?

Regards,
Marina

Important announcement for P6 class

Please get another 2 friends of yours (not less than 70 for every subject)to form a class.Once the 2 students are confirmed, we will decide on start of class. Therefore, work quickly to gather 2 more friends to join our class so that we can decide on class details.

Next year's tuition fees is marked at $200 per student (per 8 lessons). Fees are to be paid every 1st lesson (same as 09).

If you have any other questions, please let me know via sms.

Regards,
Marina

RE: KAILIN'S POST

TINGTING!:D

hello(:

LOL. Kai Lin, they haven't had PSLE yet lor, why the "your PSLE result IS".

and your results are not, in your own urm, generic word, "shit", nor is it horrendous, horrible, and whatever.

your results quite good liao lah, you weren't the last in class. :)

congratz for your EOY results! which you seem to be pretty satisfied with. :)

SO...i heard from hwee han that nanyang and hwachong are the only schools which use MSG (mean subject grade) but you'all use GPA (grade point average).

i'm quite curious, how do you'all calculate GPA?

MSG is calculated by: eg A1= 1, A2=2, B3=3 .... then find the average, so the lower the better.

the lowest possible grade is 1.0 :D

which i've been aiming to get ever since the start of the year.

so how is GPA calculated? :D

Hi! This is Kai Lin from class'08. Think that your PSLE result is surely 100% better than mine. My results is like shit. Last in my 6k class and also in the tuition class. Haiz... I used to see myself as a failure but ever since I get to Nanhua, I gained confidence and improved though my history isn't up to standard yet. But overall still get 7As and 2Bs. :D I used to be damn shy in school lor. Don't like speaking up and made few friends. But now have friends even from other class. Yay! 友谊万岁 :D But I am the nerd in class. LOL! St John is awesome and I manage to passed my BFA. I am promoting my school. It's the best school! But it's up to you guys...
Btw, how's the outing thingish going on? Hope that we got to spend a day out together, ya? Don't be fraid of us kays? If you have any suggestions on the outing, please voiced it out. Then we can see abt it. We are not scary kays? Bye! :)

The Outing

Right..I am now back and ready to get all your availabilities.

I know that Phyllis is not ok between 4th and 8th Dec.
Kailin is not ok up till 7th Dec.

Shall we make it on 10th/11th Dec? Please indicate your choice by posting on the blog(not smsing me).

We can get together at East Coast (again for the seniors). Barrage is ok except that it's really just a place to sit down and talk and do nothing else. Or you wanna go theme park?

Indicate which day you want and where you want to go/what you wanna do (movies, ktv, arcade, sit & talk, see airplane...etc) so that I can think!

PS: Ting, Phyllis is the junior who mentioned your name in class and that your chinese compo is superb.

SHOUTOUT!

HELLO!!!!!!

hey! this is your super awesome and super zilian senior from class'08! :D

I AM TINGTING!

hehheh, don't worry, not all nanyang ppl are zilian larh. is individual basis. LOL

let's meet up someday, yes? i just read our class blog (which is currently dead) and let's have a co-outing!

whoo!

OK, be ENTHU hor. all nanyang ppl are very enthu one, i dont' know why, but ya.
(am currently typing in singlish as an effort to seem nicer. though is actually due to my own laziness)

LOL i prefer not typing in perfect english. GAH!

oh we had this exercise/game during LA(language arts, eng+lit), we were converting perfect english sentences into singlish. and reading it out in a very singlish-y way. so, SINGLISH ROCKS!

haha. but that was because we were learning the culture+lang of this other country la. the jamaican english is quite, how to say, broken. HAHA but not to worry, we don't really learn the language, we just see the diff. b/w jamaican english and perfect english. and find a pattern.

LA lessons are really fun! AND it's english+literature so, ya, it's WAYYYYYYYY nicer. though it has double weightage.
urm. if you take english and literature in other schools it's also counts as two subjects la, so not really much diff.

if you're want i can continue to elaborate! but not now :D

cos if we're meeting we can talk about it more!

and your other senior in nanyang, yuejia (the quiet one), knows more about nanyang than me(i think) cos she has a sister in nanyang, who is currently sec3. so next year she is going to be a sec4!

erhem. but i'm the smarter one. LOL see what i mean by zilian? but i'm actually very modest(everyone: pukes ; me: escape from flying cans and rubbish). OK LAH ok nevermind about my zilianness.

OK YOU ALL MUST REALLY COME FOR THE CO-OUTING OK!

if not the seniors will be very sad. ): and angry! then we'll torture you when you come to our schools.

LOL, just kidding, obviously we would want you all to come.

BUT when you come in as sec1s we'll be sec3s.

and, just in case you all don't know, sec3s is the worst, i repeat, the WORST part of secondary school life.

even worse than sec4, cos you have obs (outwards bound camp which is so ~) and have to adapt to the sudden increase in homework and cca and stuff like majoring in subjects. so we might not have much time for you all eg. talking to you all and helping you all to destress and un-emo yourself. LOL. unless you all join our ccas!

BTW, i'm not saying this to scare you all off from nanyang ok! all schools are like that! nanyang is the best! and i'm not just saying it.

i will elaborate more on that if you all come for the co-outing! then we can have a Q&A session! but don't be shy or afraid of us.

LOL. VISIT OUR BLOG OK? but it's dead la.

oh. and miss marina said someone(i forgot who) actually knows my name. OH I JUST REMEMBERED I FORGOT TO INTRODUCE MYSELF. will go to the top of this post and type my name in big big letters. i'm tingting!(: and who was the one who actually knew me? LOL from where?

ok. i'm going to end this super long post now.

BYE! :D
will check back regularly, make sure you all reply to this post ok?
seniors are very nice ppl, we won't bite :D

p/s: speaking of zilianness, you all win liao la. childprodigies? pls lor, you all even more zilian than me WAHHAHAHHAHAA

The use of light in optic fibre

Wonder how emails, faxes and internet messages are transmitted? It's not over air or via satellite but rather through the use of optic fibre. Optic fibre make use of reflection of light rays to transmit messages. For more information, read this:

I need some info...

Please list the dates that you will not be available for meet up (from Nov to Dec 09)

Marina: unavailable from 23rd Nov to 6th Dec

Some updates

1) There will not be a meeting to receive new books. I have some issues with the overseas publisher as they said the books have been shipped 3 weeks ago but I have yet to receive them. So the books could have been sent to a wrong address. Which is really bad luck for us! :(
So you will not receive new books during this time.

2) With reference to 1), this would mean that I will still send you holiday homework to do. I will send a copy into your mailbox on a weekly basis. You do not need to print out the questions but please do write the title of the worksheet each time you start on it. If not, I will have no idea what you are trying to do when all I see are answers and workings.

For e.g. the homework I send over is titled 'Maths - Basic Algebra' so on your book/paper that you answer, please add in the title 'Maths - Basic Algebra'. Follow my title exactly as it is!

3) We will still try to meet up once / twice to go and have some fun! I'm working with your beloved seniors to see if we can arrange for something together. I know that Girl Guides are terribly busy during the school holidays and so are the St. John's members. (2 of your seniors are with Girl Guides and 1 is with St. John's). It'll be good to ask them how is it like to have CCA in Sec school and how good/bad uniformed groups are.

4) Do check back on the blog on a weekly basis. I will try to put up new posts at least 2x every week. If you have any interesting comments or anything funny or weird that you experienced, please do share with us. This is not just a blog for me to give out homework and instructions. This blog contains the spirit of our class so let's make this blog burst with life!

Some WS to come your way

Dear all,

Some WS will be sent to your individual emails as they are in pdf format and unable to be uploaded onto blogspot.com.

Please give me your most current and active email addresses for this process to be completed smoothly.

The WS are to be submitted at the start of class in Dec 2009 (exact date to be confirmed at a later time).

These WS are meant for you to go back to basics for the various academic subjects.

You have the option of submitting your WS electronically or printing it out and submit physically (meaning with a paper to hold onto).

If you do it electronically, please indicate in the subject line of your return email the WS title (e.g. EZ1V1). Put in the question number for each question and your answers next to it. The grading will be done electronically and returned to you in the electronic version.

When submitting electronic WS, please do the WS in either Powerpoint or Office 2003 or 2007 versions only! Do not use other Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. publisher, excel, OneNote etc). Save your work and send to my PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESS. Do not publish the work on the blog or send to the class email unless you want everyone to read your errors!

Remember:

1- give me your most current email address (one which you will check on a regular basis - once per week)

2- you can either print out or do the worksheet electronically

3- take note of the format for submission when doing WS electronically

Regards,
Marina

Let's try this out!

Here are some worksheets. You might have completed them before so please open the image files and read the WS carefully before you print it out!

This is optional practice - just to test our online homework system. If, for any reason, you are unable to view the image or download it, please write to my personal email address so that I will send individual copies of the WS into your personal emails.

Answers are also attached!
