Part I:

Hi guys! It has been damn long since I last posted... may almost 10 months... i dunno...
I have juz come back from the tough ANCOC life which has lasted for 4days... it's like a living hell... but it turn out okay in the end though... if everything goes on smoothly, I will be an official NCO le... Yay! I even met my Primary 2 frenz...
On the first week of my holiday, I went for the Chinese Culture Camp for 7 days. It is so fun!!!
Aside from these school events, I have watched Harry Potter! I was amazing even though it was not 3D. Maybe I will be watching Narnia....
By the way, I will be joining you guys on this amazing race trip on Wednesday but I am not sure whether I will be participating... So far I am the only senior who is going... TingTing and Andrea are not free and YueJia is down with chickenpox... About the guys I am not sure... Although I am so-called "extra", I still hope that we can all enjoy this trip! I will try to blend in and I hope that I will be accepted by you guys. Ya, so see you then!

Class trip

OMG I actually forgot the login username for this blog! And I had to scan the entire senior's blog to check the login details. So busy gonna lose my brain.

And anyway, here's the information for the class trip.

D&T: 24 Nov at 9am
Venue: Meeting at letter box area
Hunt location: Undisclosed
Expected to arrive back home: 3-4pm

Restricted:

No skirts (but you can wear something beneath the skirt to cover up)
No expensive gadgets (such as iPad or PSP etc)
No umbrellas needed
Do not run and scream and create a scene!
Do not pester the Gamemaster for clues or answers! Severe penalty for this!

Things to bring:

EZ link card
Water bottle
Sweater/jacket/cardigan (1 piece)
Cash (do not bring more than $50)
Pen

Instructions:

Division into 2/3 groups. We might have odd numbers. The game starts when you get your first riddle. Solving the riddle will reveal the mystery location. Once you've solved the riddle and checked your answer with the Gamemaster, you are allowed to proceed to your location. If you can't solve the riddle and require assistance from the Gamemaster, each assistance will cost you a penalty.

Throughout the game, you will have to come back to the Gamemaster to get new missions to perform. Once you've completed the mission, you are to report back to your Gamemaster to check for answers/produce evidence of your completion and get the next task. If you are stuck, you may seek clues from your Gamemaster but each clue given will cost you a penalty. There is no time restriction for each mission (except for special missions which timing restriction will be imposed) so you can take your time to complete each mission.

If you were to complete a mission wrongly (i.e. produce wrong answers/bought wrong items/went to wrong places) your Gamemaster will not clear you for that stage. You must go back and attempt that mission again. If you get it wrong a 2nd time, a clue will be given to you to help you complete the mission. However, that would impose a penalty on your overall grade.

Remember - TIME is not the most important factor! Take very careful note of what is expected of you to do! Being fast doesn't give you any additional grades but failing to adhere to instructions or doing the wrong thing WILL cost you penalties.

At all times, one member of each team MUST keep her mobile phone where she can hear the ringtone or sense the vibrations. The Gamemaster must be able to locate the team for updates. You must not wander off to other destinations outside of the building without prior information to your Gamemaster (i.e. leave the mall and head to another mall across the road).

If you require any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Gamemaster directly. This means meeting with complaints from public, injured or lost of items. The Gamemaster will try to render assistance but is not able to guarantee that you can retrieve items you've lost.

If your team attracts complaints from public or mall security officers, your team will also receive a penalty.

For some stages, you may be required to make purchases. Money will be provided to you if you managed to clear the previous mission in 1 try. If you are unable to clear the previous mission with 1 attempt, the money given to you for your next mission shall be reduced (depending on amount given to Gamemaster, the sum could be reduced from 10% to 50%). If you are unable to complete the mission with the lesser amount, you can use you 'Trade' option.

In the 'Trade' option, you will perform a small task as decided by the Gamemaster in order to exchange for more resources to complete the mission. Sometimes, it is a MUST to use this option or you will NOT be able to clear the stage. You MUST perform the task till your Gamemaster is satisfied before you will get the necessary resources to help you cross the mission.

The game will pause (no matter which stage you are at) at 12noon sharp. We will head for lunch first and check on progress. If all teams have finished all tasks, we might have a little 'bonus' activity by heading off to a 2nd mystery location to have another shorter hunt.

--------------

There will be 2 Gamemasters so ideally we should only have 2 groups.
One Gamemaster shall be me and the another shall be my friend Guo Cheng. He is from Tianjin, China and is a PhD student here and you may wish to address him as Cheng ge ge.

Decision of your group's GM will be set when we meet. Similarly, for team members, it shall be set when you are here. However, this time round, Phyllis and Claris MUST be in the same group!

If you have any other questions, please write down and ask when we meet on Wed.

And one last note - make sure you have money in your EZ link card cause you may be asked to take public transport to move to other locations.

The Outing

Once again the holiday outings are here. This time round we are going to raid Orchard Road. So here are some things to take note of:

Date: 17th March 2010 Wednesday
Time: 1130am (lunch will be provided)
Location for initial meeting: Miss Marina's block void deck

What you should bring along:
1- EZ Link card
2- Wallet with about $20
3- Water bottle
4- Jackets
5- Umbrella (2 can share 1 umbrella so decide among yourselves)
6- Wear comfortable shoes
7- No short skirts please! (At least knee length)
8- Pencil/pen
9- Calculator (you can use the calculators within your handphone)
10-Handphone!!!!(Each pair/trio must have 1 person having a handphone)

Criteria: Participation is OPTIONAL and voluntary. You may bring along 1 friend each and must confirm your attendance latest by Tuesday 16th March 3pm.

As this is a mega size treasure hunting experience along Orchard Road, you will be split up into teams of 2s or 3s depending on final number of participants. You will start from different venues along Orchard Road. As worksheets will be handed out, you MUST complete all questions on the worksheets before coming to the final check point. You must not discuss or disclose answers if you meet with other groups.

If you met with an emergency (someone falls down and is bleeding or lost an item etc), phone ME immediately. If there is serious injuries sustained, one member of the team shall ask for help by going to the Information Counters located within each shopping centre. One team member MUST keep watch with the injured member. Thus if you have only 2 members within your team and 1 is seriously injured, call me and do not move to any other positions. If help is given to you (someone comes along and offers help) please get the person to call me before agreeing to go away with this person. DO NOT walk away with anyone who offers to help you unless I am informed and has agreed!

We will start off the treasure hunt for an hour and gather together at the 1st checkpoint (venue to be decided later). Once the entire group's progress has been checked, the hunt continues. Another 1 hour after this initial meeting, we will have a 2nd checkpoint (venue to be decided later) whereby everyone MUST gather around and submit their worksheets. You will have 2.5 hours in total to roam around the upper section of Orchard Road. Our final checkpoint will be at the Haagen Dazs store at Orchard Centrepoint (where you will be treated to ice cream if you'd like).

Final results and answers will be disclosed on Thursday 18th. At the end of 2.5 hours, you MUST reach the final checkpoint even if you have not completed the worksheet.

The winning team will have lovely prizes for EACH member of the team.

During the entire hunt, you can make use of public transport to get to places (i.e. take a bus, take a train, take a cab) or you may walk (do plan out how you want to reach certain places though because in each shopping centre you will have to spend time going up and down to find answers). Therefore walking all the way is not the best option! Whatever form of transportation you take up, the expenses will be incurred by yourself (that means you pay for your own public transport).

Some money will be given to each person of the team for a task in the worksheet. You are NOT to spend this money on unrelated items. If you wish to purchase gifts you may do so provided that you are still on time.

Notes on checkpoints 1 and 2: The venue of these checkpoints will be decided at the last minute and sms will be sent to your handphones to give you reminders on the timing and location. There will be a penalty for coming in more than 5 minutes later at the checkpoint. Unless there is an accident which caused the delay, you must not reach the checkpoint more than 15 minutes from the arranged time. Your team will be disqualified if you fail to reach within 15 minutes from the set time.

Final checkpoint notes: You will be given the exact time for arrival at final checkpoint via sms on the actual day. You must NOT order any items until I have arrived (you may ask for a table for xx people and water to be served first).

During the entire hunt, you MUST not disturb the business of any shops or cause disturbance or annoyance to other shoppers. Refrain from running wildly and screaming within any shopping centres. If any security guards approach you due to such untamed behaviour, it is your responsibility to face the music.

If you have any other questions, please let me know in class.

The recent iPhone discussions...

So many people are using iPhone now it feels like we are all clones without brains and following suit by purchasing something that everybody has. As a current user, I have a few pointers to share with you just in case you want to move up to iPhone within the year.

1) All iPhones/iPhone 3G/iPhone 3G S MUST come with a data roaming line package. For the iPhone to function and download applications (or use Google Maps), you need to be able to download data via satellite. All current service providers (or what we call Telcos meaning telecommunications companies will have pre-set data packages for your choosing).

2) The battery of the iPhone range is bad! If you play a game for a bus ride of about 20 minutes, expect about 10%-20%decrease of your battery. And that is exclusive of sms and calling uses which will deplete the battery life more. That's why, always bring your power cord along with you so that once you have a way of charging (e.g. connecting to power socket or connecting to computer via usb), charge it!

3) The sms keypad is not the same as your Nokia/SE/LG whatever types. It's a qwerty keyboard which is the standard keyboard as it would look on your computer! It can be quite a hassle to text fast initially because you have to find all the keys and their locations and each key is quite slim. So you need to be agile and have long and slim fingers!

4) For iPhone to download applications, you need two ways:
i) Directly from the phone. Which means your service provider aka telcos must provide enough data roaming bytes for you to download. So the more the byte rate the better because then you can surf internet, access Googles Maps, download games, study material, songs, watch Youtube in any part of Singapore even if you don't carry your laptop around.

ii) Via your computer. Sad to say many applications on the iPhone are way too big for download using method (i) so you MUST install iTunes and Quicktime into your computer before you can download the larger applications. All prices shown on iTunes are in USD so if you see a game that costs 0.99 to own, convert into Singapore dollars. The current exchange rate is 1USD = 1.4 Singapore dollar. Think before you greedily download all the applications!

5) It's said that in July a new version of iPhone is coming! By then, I suppose the previous generations of iPhone prices will fluctuate (meaning change) again.

6) The iPhone camera does not come with flash functions so if you are trying to take a picture at night, find a light source yourself (i.e. stand near public lighting or hold a torch). Otherwise you can download applications such as Photoshop for iPhone and Flash for Free to enhance your pictures after you take them by manually adding in the flash.

My current telco provider is M1 (I'm walking on sunshine). I pay $53 per month which includes 300 minutes free talk time, 500 free sms, 12GB of free data roaming, free roaming subscription. My phone is the iPhone 3G S 16GB white colour one and it costs $248 for a two year contract.

I hope you find the information useful.

And I highly recommend the following applications:
Dictionary, PS Mobile (photoshop), Facebook for iPhone, iGV (for Golden Village shows).

What's harsher? PSLE or Sec 2 life

Which is harsher and tougher? PSLE or Sec 2 life..

Well for some of you this year is the defining year to move into IP (integrated prog) and skip O levels. For others it's the defining moment to choose if you want to go into arts or science class in Sec 3 and plan your route for life. Either way the only guarantee to both ways out is a good overall score. I wish I were your age, still in school, wandering around and wasting life away...hahaha

BTW, I did double science. My subject combination was Pure Physics, Pure Chem, Geography, Literature, EL, HMT, A maths and E maths. And I remember my E maths teacher is fresh grad from NIE...so cannot make it...teach halfway forgot simple formulas and panic and started sweating nonstop. My higher MT teacher teach halfway bra strap came out from her sleeve. My Physics teacher is like major sleeping pill...Geo teacher is HOD super strict...A maths teacher always speaks to the ceiling....Chem teacher is an Indian old lady and her accent is hard to catch.

And I think the harshest exam all these years has to be O levels. Because I was doing subjects I don't like but have to do to fit the curriculum. I hated Chem and Physics!!! But I scored very well for them (but I seriously remembered writing rubbish during exams).

What's tougher for you now? No TV? Loads of homework? Remember when you were in pri sch and u had homework and u were complaining that it was too much. Now u look back and compare with the amount now..what's worse?

bubblegum hearts.

hello :) Andrea here ;D
who was the (supercrazyawesome) girl who wanted to go to MGS?
MSN me and I'll fill you in on the shtick that happens here! oh, and pray that you're in Lee House (like me!) because the house tee is lime green, which is obviously better than red/superdark blue/pee yellow. :D
(no, don't listen to Yue Jia and go to nanyang! MGS is a lot less stressful and, well, AWESOME!)

and now, I'll abuse the privelege to complain about school life :D
my math teacher (Mrs Chen) who has been torturing (I'm so not kidding here) me for the entire 2009, is back for round two in 2010 D: and she's been picking on me (and still is!) since day one.
actually, more of day 2. since lessons only started then, but whatever.

to quote her: 'Elizabeth Tan and Andrea Lim, I know both of you are very mischievous. can't you wait?'
[Andrea Lim is me, obviously.]
[Elizabeth is my classmate/ deskmate/ fellow Mrs Chen victim. just that she has it worse.]

the situation: we were raising our hands to ask her (Chen) if we could use quadratic equations to solve a question (obviously algebra-related). and we raised our hands for 2 whole minutes before she even turned around, and not to give us an answer, but to rail at us.

GODICRAZYHATEHER. *mentally drops a bomb on Chen* :D
now where was I?

oh I'm the nice person who follows this blog! :D clap clap clap!
and no, I won't address the topic of PSLE, because based on what I see (i.e. tagboard posts) , you're all so very formal and good at english, unlike me who gets B4 for literature, you probably will do better than me! :D
(252, not counting +2 for HMT. how stupid am I? let me tell you: very.)
and I'm not an airhead, really, even if I am stupid.

I gtg to do my project on animal abuse in circuses and zoos now.
follow me on twitter blogger!
(AND NO DON'T USE TWITTER TWITTER IS FOR FAGS LIKE JUSTIN BEIBER!)

I sent an blog invite to this blogger account, so anyone who logs in here should be able to read. :D
and I presumtously added myself as a blog author incase I forget the username/password :x

anway, x's !
(especially to MGS junior-to-be. muahahaha.)

andrea!

P/S. my tennis racquet is this spazz orange too. :D

Long time

Long time since I came in. Glad to know that things are working out well here. And I see the Seniors are hard at work trying to add oil to the the Juniors.

This year, those in BPPS first class has a new form teacher. Her name is Miss Goh and she's a little sorta too cheerful. I heard that she comes into class and says, 'It's a wonderful day today!' I told your juniors to respond to her - it was wonderful until you came in!

She's quite a homework freak too. I heard that you juniors have 10 homework to do in the money of Jan. New teachers are like this - always pushing and trying too hard. She needs to show results to the Ministry just to prove her worth. I feel sad for her.

Anyway, how are the Seniors doing? Sec 2 already. Next year major changes will come your way. And your results for this year and choices at the end of the year will start to shape your destiny and what you study for the next 8 years. Double science? Triple science? IP? Which 2 humanities subject to take up? Have you considered them yet? Share with me...

Best,
Marina

HOW I SURVIVED PSLE (PART 2)

Well, Miss Marina said that you would like to know about de-stressing.

Though I didn't get a response or a reply from any of you, I thought I would just share some methods. But these methods are quite ordinary, all of you can think of it, so, well...

How can you de-stress?

Everyone feels stressful when exams are near.

So you can console yourself by knowing – You’re not the only one freaked out.

For me, I was still very happy-go-lucky. I only felt stressed on the day of the exam itself, so I didn’t really use any methods to de-stress.

But now in Nanyang, I have to start revising earlier by around two weeks. Sometimes it’s really frustrating when you can’t memorise the names of some famous people like Chandragupta Maurya (quite a mouthful right?) or geography stuff.

Here are some ways on how you can relieve stress, most of which you should already know.

Group

1. Outing! – You can have an outing with your friends, i.e. watch movie, shop, etc.

2. Arcade! – I highly recommend those games where you use the mallet and whack those stuff which pop out of the holes. It’s good for venting of frustration and de-stressing. If you’re not the “violent” type, try the 3D stimulator at Time Zone (I know there’s one at Causeway Point). It’s this bumper-car/cabin thing where you sit with one other person. You select a film and the thing would move (or rather, jerk) sideways, up and down along with the film. It’s really, really fun. Your three seniors all tried before. A must-try!

3. PARTY! – Whether it’s for a birthday party or a class party, a party will definitely heighten up the atmosphere! Oh yeah. Don’t forget to invite us (not to those full of juniors whom we don’t know though). Just say free food, music, fun and games and we’ll be there! (Just joking).

Individual

1. Watch TV! – You should watch those entertainment programmes like 100% entertainment (5pm, weekdays, Channel 8) or Just for Laughs Gags.

2. Phone-call! – Call your friend and chat! Gossip, latest idol news, whatever you can talk about! I did that with my friend the last two-three weeks of holidays.

3. Internet! – Turn on your computer and go facebook, play games? Or come to this blog and POST and TAG please. By the way, I highly recommend going to Youtube and watch this simply fabulously awesome Taiwanese drama show “K.O.3anguo”! It’s so freaking nice! Or watch Ep16 part 6/7, fast-forward about 5 minutes or so (to the scene in this restaurant or something), guaranteed one huge laughing session.

Or simple, just go to sleep. Seriously.

If you really feel really stressed but have no one to pour your misery to, post on this blog. Hopefully, if we’re free enough, we would reply you too!

Oh yeah. I have a really funny and innovative senior who posted this on their batch blog. It’s super hilarious, also about de-stressing. (http://ooh-gah-sha-gah.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html)

Don’t worry, it’s not some lame virus or something.

Ok, I know you are very busy and stuff, not very IT-savvy, so you won't be online frequently or something, but on the rare occasions that you do, please try and post or just leave a tag on this blog! You have 47 posts in this blog already but those are either written by Miss Marina or us seniors!

The thing is that, this is YOUR blog, and it is therefore YOUR responsibility to keep it going. And just tagging on the blog, it's not that hard right? Ok, I shouldn't be too hard on you, I know P6 and PSLE are stressing you out, so I won't blame you or anything.

Here's a song! I changed the lyrics.

TINGTING(:

p/s: OMG KAILING YOU ARE SO PRO LA! 1st in class leh somemore. and 7th in school. must be more confident k! (:

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Saw Tingting's post, that's why I am also addressing the topic on PSLE...

I am the one who drop by 10++ marks in PSLE... I got a 264 (266 inclusive of HCL) in my Prelim and only got a 250 (253 inclusive of HCL) in my PSLE. Dropped by 14 marks. Third last in class. One of the last few in my secondary 1 class...

But miraculously, I manage to cling on the first position in class and seventh in school. It's not that my school is lousy, but it's because I put in effort since I failed my history. It's the same as PSLE. Despite the fact that you did badly or even fail, treat it like a motivation to success. I am not sure if you are going to read my post after my previous post though. : Haiz... ... PSLE is nothing to be afraid of, so 加油!加油加!油!

For goodness sake...

Well I just came into the blog and realized hmm lots of stuff have been uploaded recently. Apologies for the long time it took for me to start blogging on here. One important reason was because I was so caught up preparing classes!!!

P6 class has started so it's also quite messy preparing stuff. Change of syllabus meant revamp of classroom material. So irritated with the constant change!!And I think it's change for the worse...think the Seniors are lucky to have moved onto a new level using the previous syllabus. The science now is really rocket science...haiz...a nation of brainy and smart people can't be created by making students study space science at p6...

Not much comments on outing...just thought that it could have been better planned in terms of location and timing. Wasted some time on travelling and standing at a spot waiting for decisions to be made. I can totally understand the 'pain' the seniors are feeling. I feel this 'pain' too when I go out with some people. And that includes the very few times I feel whenever you (seniors or juniors alike) talk amongst yourselves and I am so left out. Or when I ask a qn and get a 1-2 word answer. But everything takes time - relationships even more so. I think seniors should be better informed of this isn't it? You can't have everyone to be bright and chirpy and ready to party the moment they see you. And plus this group is more shy than your group. It took time to break into it their circle and to get them to respond and treat you like one of them.

One main reason is also upbringing. You can see clear differences here. Seniors are more independent. And it's not cause you are more matured. It's the kind of family that you live in. If a child follows her parents everywhere everyday, then she is less likely to be so sociable to people she just met cause in usual situations it's her mother who deals with newly-known people. If you happen to have time alone, like when your parents are both working and not able to spend so much time with you everyday, then you are more likely to make decisions on your own and are more likely to find friends outside to fill your time. That makes you more daring and sociable when approaching people you've just met.

For most of your juniors, they tend to go to school and come back to see at least one parent at home. Their parents will then prepare the afternoon for them (eat, shower, sleep, play, do homework) and might just sit with them to study and complete assignments. They don't have much time for self exploration and even if they play, it's within the confines of their own area (the condo) and with people they already are familiar with. That's why they tend to be lesser matured than when the seniors were at the same age.

Everyone's character is shaped by the way they are being brought up. As a person, and to blend in with society next time, you need to get down to the reason as to why some people behave as such. And also, if they choose to behave as such, you cannot judge or make them change or expect them to act like you. What you can do is to either accept it then work around it (like for instance in this case you talk more and ask less qns to fill in the time with talk and hopefully they will start to act like you after your 1000th sentence) or you can choose to spend less time with people who behave in ways which you cannot accept. That's how you survive in society.

Being brutally honest like in the blog is a good way to show your inner feelings to people whom you trust. But remember, you cannot trust everyone to take whatever you said in good stride - meaning some people might start to dislike you for being honest because you might have hurt their feelings accidentally. Also, as you move higher up, you realise that some girls can't take such honesty. They will gang up and leave u alone because they can't take your honesty.

Seniors, don't take the Junior's behaviour to heart. They didn't mean to be unfriendly or hate you in any way...that I can assure you because they told me that. You did a great job nevertheless in trying to be supportive and friendly and not walking away with an angry face. That would have hurt your juniors...and scared them off.

Be more accomodating because you are the more matured ones and should be so calculative with the younger ones. You are the wiser ones... ;)

Marina
