The recent iPhone discussions...

So many people are using iPhone now it feels like we are all clones without brains and following suit by purchasing something that everybody has. As a current user, I have a few pointers to share with you just in case you want to move up to iPhone within the year.

1) All iPhones/iPhone 3G/iPhone 3G S MUST come with a data roaming line package. For the iPhone to function and download applications (or use Google Maps), you need to be able to download data via satellite. All current service providers (or what we call Telcos meaning telecommunications companies will have pre-set data packages for your choosing).

2) The battery of the iPhone range is bad! If you play a game for a bus ride of about 20 minutes, expect about 10%-20%decrease of your battery. And that is exclusive of sms and calling uses which will deplete the battery life more. That's why, always bring your power cord along with you so that once you have a way of charging (e.g. connecting to power socket or connecting to computer via usb), charge it!

3) The sms keypad is not the same as your Nokia/SE/LG whatever types. It's a qwerty keyboard which is the standard keyboard as it would look on your computer! It can be quite a hassle to text fast initially because you have to find all the keys and their locations and each key is quite slim. So you need to be agile and have long and slim fingers!

4) For iPhone to download applications, you need two ways:
i) Directly from the phone. Which means your service provider aka telcos must provide enough data roaming bytes for you to download. So the more the byte rate the better because then you can surf internet, access Googles Maps, download games, study material, songs, watch Youtube in any part of Singapore even if you don't carry your laptop around.

ii) Via your computer. Sad to say many applications on the iPhone are way too big for download using method (i) so you MUST install iTunes and Quicktime into your computer before you can download the larger applications. All prices shown on iTunes are in USD so if you see a game that costs 0.99 to own, convert into Singapore dollars. The current exchange rate is 1USD = 1.4 Singapore dollar. Think before you greedily download all the applications!

5) It's said that in July a new version of iPhone is coming! By then, I suppose the previous generations of iPhone prices will fluctuate (meaning change) again.

6) The iPhone camera does not come with flash functions so if you are trying to take a picture at night, find a light source yourself (i.e. stand near public lighting or hold a torch). Otherwise you can download applications such as Photoshop for iPhone and Flash for Free to enhance your pictures after you take them by manually adding in the flash.

My current telco provider is M1 (I'm walking on sunshine). I pay $53 per month which includes 300 minutes free talk time, 500 free sms, 12GB of free data roaming, free roaming subscription. My phone is the iPhone 3G S 16GB white colour one and it costs $248 for a two year contract.

I hope you find the information useful.

And I highly recommend the following applications:
Dictionary, PS Mobile (photoshop), Facebook for iPhone, iGV (for Golden Village shows).
